The opposition of the left to the war in Iraq is based on the ‘fact’ that there were no weapons of mass destruction, no chemical weapons, no connection to terrorist with Iraq, and that we went to war with Iraq based on those lies as told by President Bush. Of course, they conveniently forget that it was the Clinton administration that established that there was a threat to the U.S. from Iraq, for all of those reasons, and the foundation was established to justify war with Iraq, should Saddam continue to violate UN sanctions and resist UN inspectors, during the Clinton administration. They also ignore the simple reality that just because the weapons were not there when we arrived does not mean that they did not exist; it only means that Clinton gave him enough time to find better places to hide them, or sold them to his neighbors.
Now we find that the UN itself had chemical agents that were confiscated from Iraq ten years ago, and brought them to the UN complex in the U.S. Then the UN misplaced them, and apparently had no idea where they were, until they were found lying about in an office that was being cleared for new tenants.
How are we supposed to trust the UN when it tells us that some terrorist sponsoring nation does not have WMDs or chemical agents when the UN can’t even find the ones they’ve already confiscated?! How are we supposed to trust the inspectors the UN sends in will be competent to find any evidence at all? What else did the UN find that they have since misplaced? For all we know, those vials that the UN had were conveniently misplaced so that some agent could return to retrieve them and use them on U.S. domestic targets. For whatever reason, they were never retrieved; perhaps that individual was told to leave after 9/11, and recovering them became impossible; regardless, that such lethal chemicals could be so easily lost and possible used against us within our own borders is unacceptable. With friends like the UN, who needs Al Queda?
We now have had a very frightening reminder that Saddam did have chemical weapons. So, although the UN is full of incompetence, apparently the inspectors were right about Iraqs ability to procure and produce WMDS. And while news reports seem to be dismissing the importance of these chemicals because they were originally used in WWI, it is not a trivial matter. Those chemicals are lethal, and they are proof that Saddam was in possession of and working to develop WMDs for his own personal use, and quite probably to make them available to the highest bidder. The lefts claims of an ‘unjust’ war continue to ring hollow in the face of what is true and known fact about Saddam Hussein. It is now up to the U.S. to ensure that this never happen again. As the host nation, we should be able to protect our cities and citizens from the den of ‘diplomats’ that are free to roam our nation. If the UN cannot accept greater security measures imposed upon it by U.S. authorities, then the UN should move out of the U.S.
