This book by John McWhorter, a professor of linguistics, is a tremendous look at the end of the civil rights struggle and the beginning of the more polarizing Black Power movement. You have to keep a dictionary nearby, this guy has quite a way with expressing himself, but it’s a fascinating read if you’re at all interested in what happened to black society from the perspective of black American in Indianapolis, of all places. Many things that may surprise some of you.
